Dimethicone is a common ingredient in all cosmetic formulas. Due to its small size, it easily enters the food chain, causing loss of biodiversity, entering the human body causing toxicity and increasing the risk of cancer.
According to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), dimethicone, Cyclotetrasiloxane, Cyclopentasiloxane are classified as very persistent in the environment and highly bioaccumulative. In 2015, the UK submitted documents to ECHA to demonstrate the environmental risks of silicone use when discharged into wastewater.
Cyclosiloxanes D4, D5, D6 and dimethicone are widely used in products that improve skin and hair properties and provide softness. However, D4, D5, D6 are associated with the destruction of the skin’s protective layer.
